When I was a kid, being an only child, there were a few moments when I felt bored. It was during such moments that I found solace in creativity. I can remember when, being stuck in bed with the 'flu and bored to death, my mother gave me a children's magazine to read. This kept me going for a while, The trouble was having read the thing I was still bored, so I started to cut out the images and reassemble them, creating collages. Mum wasn't too happy about my scissor frenzy at first, but when she saw the results, she gave me more old magazines to play with. Boredom can sometimes be a blessing. It can stimulate the imagination and push us into doing “something different”, something other than the usual. Looking for 'something different'These days, although there always seems to be plenty to do, there are still moments when I feel bored. I can't spend all day on Facebook, and although I love to read, I still often feel that craving for “something different” without being able to work out what it might be. It's moments like these when many of us start opening fridges and food cupboards, scouting for crisps, biscuits or anything else that might satisfy our cravings. We're not hungry, our stomachs aren't crying out to be filled, yet at the same time we can't stop stuffing ourselves with junk food The sugar rush affords quick relief, but after a few minutes the boredom kicks in once more and we start searching once more for that “something”. Create a recipe!I've found myself in this situation many times, but I still remember my childhood lesson that boredom releases creativity, with end results that are often amusing and always interesting. Why not use these moments of boredom, when technically we have nothing better to do, and start getting creative in the kitchen. I know many people are intimidated by the very idea of creating a recipe from scratch. Please don't worry! It's easier than you might think. HOW TO CREATE A RECIPE1)Choose a recipe you like (check your favourite cookery blog or recipe book), but make sure you don't have all the ingredients. 2)Check what you have in your fridge or pantry. 3)Using the recipe as a guide, substitute some of the ingredients with whatever you have under hand. I'm certain you'll find that creating a recipe is easier than you thought. What you'll end up with is your own creation, your own take on a familiar recipe, and a strong sense of fulfilment and pride that you've created something out of boredom.
