Going to the corner shop is more than just a transaction of food for money. It's the simplest answer to a more complex problem of human relationships. For most Brits the word bodega doesn't mean anything, but it's the Spanish word for grocery store and they are very popular in the USA. These places are an expression of the integration of different cultures, and so are loved by all the people living in the neighbourhood. A bodega is a place where you can buy anything from toothpaste to sticky tape, from a fake watch to fresh baked bread, and while you're there you can pick up some ham and some cough syrup. Bodegas are everywhere. No matter where they're from or what they called it, everybody has their own special memories of a little local store. When I was a kid and I lived in Rome, I used to visit a store run by a little old lady called Mrs. Colomba. Her name in English means “Dove”. To my child's eye she seemed as old as Methuselah. She'd been open since before I was born. Her shop was tiny but stuffed to the brim, canned goods on the high shelves, crates full of fresh, in-season vegetables down low. |
